Hold Fast To Dreams

Hold fast to dreams

For if dreams die

life is a broken-winged bird

That cannot fly

Hold fast to dreams

For when dreams go

Life is a barren field

Frozen with snow

Langston Hughes

As I go through my own stages of grief I know with a vengeance that I will never get to acceptance. On November 9th we woke to a dark morning. A demagogue who with instinctive cunning was able to stir up enough of society’s myriad resentments, from job losses to racism, with abundant measures of fear, ascended to the highest office in the land.

Farewell President Obama. Thank you for eight years of dignity, compassion, gentle humor, and wisdom. We cannot let it be in vain. Millions of people in our country believed in a brighter future because of your presidency. There is strength in that as we face the murky days ahead.

What can each of us do to overcome what will be a new kind of governing filthy with hypocrisy, reckless arrogance, ignorance, and mendacity? Now is the time to be resilient and retain faith in both our ideals and our fellow man. We cannot allow our hopes to be extinguished. If we do, then those about to seize political power have truly won. There are many kinds of power, and our country will be sorely tested.

The shadow of fascism is looming over us. It is important to understand this exposed fact in the calmest and most measured way possible, but we cannot let it block out the light. The light must come from within each of us. We need to speak out, to speak up, to work hard for better education – a kind of education that is not about test scores, but more about how to think…and how to feel. We need to be aware of the preciousness of our freedoms, guaranteed to us through our Constitution and guard them well. We will get through this to a better place-if we are determined. The results of this election are ultimately a self-destructing mandate, an angry mandate without a trace of intelligence or compassion, a type of political mob behavior.

On the eve of Veteran’s day, with gratitude for, not only our own men and woman, but for all people who have died for their countries all over the world, we must fight pervasive nationalistic ideas born of fear and get back to a place in our collective consciousness that remembers the pride of raising a torch to light the way for the tired, the poor, the huddled masses yearning to breathe free… It is then that America will truly be great again.
